Current research focuses on American foreign policy; American defense and national security issues; Western Europe; East Asia, particularly the role of the People’s Republic of China in the region; the Arab-Israeli peace process; and, terrorism and political violence. Work-study (for Pennsylvania residents) and internships are available throughout the year. (Note: Internships are unpaid.) Students serve in one of three support capacities:
Research Assistants work under the direct supervision of the Institute’s research staff. Students help maintain data files, conduct literature searches, compile indices, or produce other material.
Editorial Assistants are trained to analyze scholarly articles, correspond with authors, fact check, copyedit, proofread, and generally help with the production of the quarterly journal Orbis, as well as perform general administrative duties throughout the Institute.
Administrative Assistants help with conference preparation, development, public relations, and maintain the Institute’s specialized periodical collection.
All language skills are welcome, but knowledge of Russian, Arabic, French, German, and Spanish is especially helpful. A familiarity with word-processing programs and conducting research on the worldwide web is also desirable. Internships are available for an academic year, a semester, a summer, or by agreement, for a shorter time. A minimum commitment of 10 hours a week is required.
